Update Gymkhana Grid finals 2016
Ended at 3. place in the danish drift championship. Quite happy with that as i missed 2 rounds compleatly.
The Higlight of this year was our trip to Gymkhana Grid finals in Greece!
what a great trip it was! Meet a lot of very nice People. It was a great event by Monster Energy!
We had a long drive from Denmark to get there. 2300km to Italy and then ferry for 8 Hours and then another drive for 6 Hours to get there. The Trip went with no problems at all, and we arrived
Wednesday evening at the hotel, got our track passes and went out and setup our Pit and get the car unloaded and started. All worked fine.
Thursday we had some practice runs at the track and it went very good. We where still not running max grip, just trying to get to know the track. Still we where one of the fastest out there.
In the evening time we had a parade driving all the cars with police escort in to town! This was one of the most crazy fun experiences ever. Driving the car on the stress, doing burnouts, drifting and 1000 of people standing along the road cheering us. What a blast!
Next day (Friday) the game was on! Now we where being timed and we tried to find more and more speed in the track. overall
Friday at practice we ended up setting the 2. fastest time! Was really pumped about that but knew we had to step it up for the qualification and finals.
Saturday we had Qualification. All when okay, I could feel the pressure now and did not run quite as fast as yesterday but still we ended on 5. place in qualification! Very happy with that! :-)
Sunday the big day! We tried some new things under training and it work out VERY good! just get 2 seconds of our times compared to the day before. Did a 1:02 time and where feeling confident for the top 16 battles.
In the my first run in the top 16 i made a few errors and did not make the best run ever but still a decent time, time to change track and do the second run. But when i got the car moved over to track 2. I noticed the engine was running hot. the water temperature was 100 degrees. We had done many runs all weekend and not had any problems so was surprised to see this now! I was already aligned and ready to go for my second run, when i tried to flip the switch for the fans but I could not hear them! normally they are loud so know i know they where not running....At the same moment the flag vent and i had to launch! I did, hoping that the engine would not overheat to much on the run. But I was unfocused because of this and did not run the perfect line.
And out of the last 360 the car started to overheat badly and hesitate on the throttle. When I got over the finish line I knew it would be close. I was much faster in practice than the guy I was running against but i had made 2 bad runs now in the top 16..... It was a looooong wait in the car for the result! Then it came... I lost! Dammit. My time was 2:09.390 and the guy I was racing made a 2:09.270 So it could not be much closer. Great run from him but bad for me.
Well I had to start the car now and get back to the pits, because it was boiling and overheating like crazy. 124 degrees in water temp is not good. It turns out it was the relays controlling the fans that had failed! Bad luck but that is racing!
We had an AWESOME after party after the finals, celebrating my 2 new friends Adam Elder on 2. and Danny Cross on 3. And of cause big congratulations to Luke Woodham for taking first! He really showed what he was made of in the finals! Great driving by all, and next year I hope to be up there with them :-)
We ended at 9. pace over all, and setting the 3. fastest overall time in the RWD class Sunday just before the finals. That was not bad at all for the first Gymkhana event ever. So next year we will aim for a podium! :-)
This was our first Gymkhana Grid but will for sure not be the last!
Next year we will focus on winning a qualifier so we can get to the finals again.
A BIG thanks to all our sponsors and all the private donations that made this possible!
